چکیده

Many investigations have been devoted to the solution of the problem of the mechanism by which the hookworm exerts its deleterious effects. There is no doubt that the answer to the question is as complex as the syndrome produced by the hookworm. Loss of blood due to the sucking worm, increased by the prolonged oozing from the abandoned bites in jejunum and duodenum, is certainly one factor concerned in causing anaemia; this anaemia is responsible, due to the anoxaemia accompanying it, for the myocardial damage in the majority of cases. Many authors think that the amount of blood lost in this way is not sufficient to explain the extreme degree of anaemia which so frequently is encountered in ancylostomiasis, though the quantity of blood drawn by one worm daily is estimated as being between 0.38 and 0.84 c.cm. (c/. Strong, 1942). Since most of our hookworm patients suffer from malaria and from intestinal infec-

Bayesian risk maps for Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm mono-infections in a setting where both parasites co-exist.

There is growing interest in the use of Bayesian geostatistical models for predicting the spatial distribution of parasitic infections, including hookworm, Schistosoma mansoni and co-infections with both parasites. The aim of this study was to predict the spatial distribution of mono-infections with either hookworm or S. mansoni in a setting where both parasites co-exist. School-based cross-sec...

In Ivorian school-age children, infection with hookworm does not reduce dietary iron absorption or systemic iron utilization, whereas afebrile Plasmodium falciparum infection reduces iron absorption by half.

BACKGROUND In sub-Saharan Africa, parasitic diseases and low bioavailable iron intake are major causes of anemia. Anemia results from inflammation, preventing iron recycling and decreasing dietary iron absorption. Hookworm, Plasmodium, and Schistosoma infections contribute to anemia, but their influence on dietary iron absorption and recycling is unknown. OBJECTIVE The objective was to measur...

Rapid Detection and Identification of Human Hookworm Infections through High Resolution Melting (HRM) Analysis

BACKGROUND Hookworm infections are still endemic in low and middle income tropical countries with greater impact on the socioeconomic and public health of the bottom billion of the world's poorest people. In this study, a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with high resolution melting-curve (HRM) analysis was evaluated for an accurate, rapid and sensitive tool for species identif...

Evidence of Microbial Translocation Associated with Perturbations in T Cell and Antigen-Presenting Cell Homeostasis in Hookworm Infections

BACKGROUND Microbial translocation (MT) is the process by which microbes or microbial products translocate from the intestine to the systemic circulation. MT is a common cause of systemic immune activation in HIV infection and is associated with reduced frequencies of CD4(+) T cells; no data exist, however, on the role of MT in intestinal helminth infections. METHODS We measured the plasma le...

Molecular Identification of Hookworm Isolates in Humans, Dogs and Soil in a Tribal Area in Tamil Nadu, India

BACKGROUND Hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) remain a major public health problem worldwide. Infections with hookworms (e.g., A. caninum, A. ceylanicum and A. braziliense) are also prevalent in dogs, but the role of dogs as a reservoir for zoonotic hookworm infections in humans needs to be further explored. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS As part of an open-label communi...
